Private Car and Driver Cost in India Per Day: Sedan, SUV and Luxury Car Rates
Ana, a photographer from Lisbon, wanted to drive through Rajasthan at her own pace, stopping wherever the light was right. Renting a self-drive car crossed her mind for about ten minutes, until she watched a video of a Jaipur roundabout at rush hour: camels, trucks, motorbikes carrying families of four and cows all claiming the same piece of road. She decided instead to hire a car with a driver, and immediately ran into a new problem. Every quote was structured differently. One charged per kilometre, one per day, one quoted a single package price, and none seemed to include the same things.
Hiring a private car and driver in India is the most popular way for foreign visitors to travel between cities. It is safer, more comfortable and more flexible than trains or buses, and much less stressful than driving yourself. Self-drive rentals do exist, but very few foreign visitors use them, because Indian road habits take years to master and insurance claims after an accident can become complicated.
This guide explains how car and driver pricing works, gives realistic daily rates for sedans, SUVs, group vehicles and luxury cars, and lists the hidden charges to check before you confirm. Prices are for the October to March season and kept on the higher side.
How Car and Driver Pricing Works in India
Before comparing rates, it helps to know the three pricing models used by Indian operators, because the same trip can look cheap or expensive depending on how it is quoted.
| Pricing Model | How It Works | Typical Charges / Conditions | Best For |
| Local Package | Fixed-duration city sightseeing package, usually 8 hours and 80 kilometres. Half-day packages may offer 4 hours and 40 kilometres. | Extra hours: ₹200–₹500 per hour. Extra kilometres: ₹14–₹25 per kilometre. | Full-day sightseeing in Delhi or Jaipur and local transfers with stops. |
| Outstation Per-Kilometre Billing | Charges are calculated per kilometre, usually with a minimum billing distance of 250 kilometres per day. | A 10-day trip may be billed for at least 2,500 kilometres, even if the actual distance travelled is lower. | Intercity travel and multi-city road trips. |
| All-Inclusive Daily Rate | A fixed daily price covering the agreed travel distance and specified trip expenses. | May include fuel, tolls, parking, state permits, and the driver's food and lodging allowance. Confirm all inclusions before booking. | Foreign travellers and tourists who want predictable travel costs. |
| Driver Allowance | Daily allowance for the driver's food and accommodation during the trip. | Standard cars: ₹300–₹500 per day. Luxury vehicles: ₹600–₹1,000 per day. | Outstation journeys and multi-day tours. |
| Expressway Tolls | Toll charges depend on the route and vehicle category. | Delhi to Agra: approximately ₹500–₹700 one way. Delhi to Jaipur: approximately ₹500–₹700 one way. | Trips involving expressways and intercity routes. |
| State Entry Permits | Applicable permits or taxes may be charged when a tourist vehicle enters another state. | Can range from a few hundred to over ₹1,000 per crossing, depending on the vehicle, route, and applicable rules. | Interstate travel between Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. |
| Parking Charges | Parking fees at monuments, attractions, and hotels. | Approximately ₹50–₹300 per visit, depending on the location and vehicle. | City sightseeing and visits to tourist attractions. |
| Night Charges | Additional charges may apply when the driver works late at night or early in the morning. | Approximately ₹300–₹500 for applicable trips, often for travel after 10 pm or before 6 am. | Late-night airport arrivals and early-morning Taj Mahal visits. |
Sedan Rates: Swift Dzire, Toyota Etios and Honda City
Sedans are the most affordable way to hire a car with driver in India, and they suit solo travellers or couples travelling light.
The Maruti Swift Dzire is the most common tourist sedan in North India. It is a compact four-door car with air conditioning, room for three passengers and a boot that holds two medium suitcases or one large suitcase with a carry-on. Its close cousin, the Toyota Etios, offers similar space and is still widely used by tour operators, although Toyota has stopped selling it new. The Honda City is a step up, with more legroom, a quieter cabin and a larger boot that takes two full-size suitcases.
| Pricing Model | Vehicle Type | Approximate Price | Pricing Details |
| Local Package (8 Hours / 80 Kilometres) | Dzire / Etios | ₹2,500–₹3,200 | Fixed-price local sightseeing package during peak season. |
| Local Package (8 Hours / 80 Kilometres) | Honda City | ₹3,200–₹4,000 | Fixed-price local sightseeing package during peak season. |
| Outstation Travel | Dzire / Etios | ₹13–₹15 per kilometre | Minimum billing of 250 kilometres per day, plus a driver allowance of ₹300–₹400 per day. |
| Outstation Travel | Honda City | ₹16–₹19 per kilometre | Minimum billing of 250 kilometres per day, plus a driver allowance of ₹300–₹400 per day. |
| All-Inclusive Daily Rate | Dzire / Etios | ₹3,800–₹4,500 per day | Daily rate for multi-city tours, with inclusions to be confirmed with the operator. |
| All-Inclusive Daily Rate | Honda City | ₹4,500–₹5,500 per day | Daily rate for multi-city tours, with inclusions to be confirmed with the operator. |
Sedans have clear limits. On long stretches, such as the five-hour drive from Jaipur to Jodhpur or the six-hour drive from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, the rear seat becomes tiring for tall passengers. The ride over rough village roads is also less comfortable than in a larger vehicle. The boot fills quickly once you add shopping, and many travellers return home with block-printed bedcovers, rugs and textiles.
For one or two travellers with light luggage on a short trip, a sedan offers excellent value. For couples with two large suitcases, or anyone travelling longer than a week, most operators recommend moving up to an Innova Crysta or Hycross. The extra cost works out to only ₹800 to ₹1,500 per person per day, and on a long road trip, that difference shows up in how fresh you feel each evening.
Ana chose a Honda City for her first week in Rajasthan, mostly for the budget. By day four, she had bought two rugs and a stack of textiles in Jaipur, and she upgraded to an Innova Crysta for the rest of the trip.
SUV and MPV Rates: Innova Crysta, Hycross, Fortuner and Tempo Traveller
For most foreign travellers, the larger vehicles offer the best balance of comfort and cost. The workhorse of Indian tourism is the Toyota Innova Crysta. It is a seven or eight-seat vehicle with captain seats in the second row, strong air conditioning and enough luggage space for four large suitcases when the third row is folded. Its newer sibling, the Toyota Innova Hycross, is a hybrid petrol model that is noticeably quieter on expressways, smoother over bumps, and offers features such as a panoramic sunroof on top versions.
Realistic Innova Crysta rates in peak season run about ₹3,800 to ₹4,800 for a local 8 hour and 80 kilometre package, and ₹19 to ₹22 per kilometre for outstation travel, with a driver allowance of ₹400 to ₹500 per day. On an all-inclusive daily rate, an Innova Crysta costs ₹5,500 to ₹6,500 per day, and a Hycross ₹6,500 to ₹7,500 per day. Over a six-day Golden Triangle tour, that comes to about ₹33,000 to ₹39,000 for a Crysta. For a fourteen-day Rajasthan circuit, it comes to ₹77,000 to ₹91,000, which is very reasonable when split between two to four travellers.
The Toyota Fortuner is a rugged seven-seat SUV that appeals to travellers heading into hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand or Ladakh, where higher ground clearance helps. It costs about ₹25 to ₹30 per kilometre, or ₹7,500 to ₹9,000 per day all-inclusive. In Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle, it offers little practical advantage over a Crysta, and the third row is less comfortable.
For families and small groups, the Tempo Traveller is the standard choice. The 9-seater version suits families of five or six with luggage. The 12-seater suits groups of eight to ten, and the 16-seater larger groups. Expect about ₹24 to ₹28 per kilometre for a 9-seater, ₹28 to ₹32 for a 12-seater and ₹32 to ₹38 for a 16-seater, or roughly ₹8,500 to ₹12,500 per day all-inclusive depending on size. The newer Force Urbania, a more modern and comfortable van with better suspension and individual reclining seats, costs about 20 to 30 percent more than a Tempo Traveller of similar size, at ₹11,000 to ₹16,000 per day.
Group vehicles carry two extra costs. Many hotels in old city centres, such as Jaipur's walled city or the lanes around Udaipur's lake, cannot accommodate large vans. Guests are then transferred by smaller cars for the last stretch, usually ₹300 to ₹800 per trip. Tempo Travellers also pay higher tolls and permit fees than cars, which a good all-inclusive quote should already cover.
For most couples and families of up to four, the Innova Crysta or Hycross remains the right answer. It is spacious, reliable on every type of road in India, and widely available, so replacements are easy if a vehicle develops a problem mid-tour.
Luxury Car Rates: Mercedes, BMW, Camry and Vellfire
At the top end, luxury car rental with driver in India turns long drives into part of the pleasure. These vehicles are mostly used on luxury Golden Triangle and Rajasthan tours, for airport transfers to palace hotels and for weddings.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid is the entry point to luxury travel. It is a quiet, smooth executive sedan with generous rear legroom. It costs about ₹9,000 to ₹12,000 per day all-inclusive, or ₹30 to ₹40 per kilometre. It suits couples who want a premium feel without the cost of a German car.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, both in long-wheelbase versions in India with extra rear-seat space, are the most popular choices for luxury tours. A local 8 hour and 80 kilometre package costs about ₹14,000 to ₹20,000, while multi-day all-inclusive rates run ₹16,000 to ₹22,000 per day. Chauffeurs for these cars typically wear uniforms, speak good English and have experience with high-profile guests. Boot space fits two large suitcases and two carry-on bags, so couples with heavy luggage sometimes send extra bags in a support vehicle for ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 per day.
The Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM are luxury MPVs with reclining lounge seats, footrests and privacy partitions in some versions. They are popular with families and travellers who want to rest on long drives. Expect ₹22,000 to ₹35,000 per day, with limited availability outside Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur.
At the very top, the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series cost about ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 per day. They are usually booked for airport transfers, wedding arrivals or one special day rather than an entire tour.
Luxury cars come with a few practical considerations. Their availability in smaller towns is limited, so the car usually travels with you from Delhi or Jaipur for the full trip, and empty return distances are built into the price. Rough roads to some desert camps near Jaisalmer and to remote heritage hotels are better handled by an SUV, so luxury itineraries sometimes switch to a Fortuner or Crysta for one day. Booking early matters, because operators often have only a handful of these cars for the whole season. For December weddings and New Year, luxury cars are often reserved three to four months ahead, and late requests may only find older models. When you confirm, ask for the model year and a recent photograph of the actual car, which reputable operators share without hesitation. It is also worth confirming that the chauffeur has driven the specific route before, especially on the smaller roads beyond Jaipur and Udaipur.
Hidden Charges to Check and Booking a Car with Driver from India Fortune Journey
Whatever vehicle you choose, these are the car and driver charges in India worth checking before you confirm a booking.
First, ask whether the price is per kilometre or an all-inclusive daily rate, and whether the 250 kilometre daily minimum applies. Second, confirm that tolls, state permits, parking and the driver's allowance are included rather than added later. Third, check for a night charge on late airport arrivals and early sunrise departures. Fourth, ask about the vehicle's age. Reputable operators use cars less than four or five years old, while older cars are more likely to have tired air conditioning and worn seats. Fifth, confirm whether the quote includes return distance if your trip ends in a different city from where it started, as one-way trips often carry an empty return charge.
On the road, a few habits help. Drivers usually take a meal break while you sightsee and sleep in driver accommodation provided by hotels, so there is no need to arrange anything for them. Tips are customary at the end of the trip, typically ₹600 to ₹800 per day for standard vehicles and ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per day for luxury chauffeurs, given by the whole group. Be cautious if a driver repeatedly suggests specific shops or gemstone showrooms, because commissions on purchases are common in the industry. A good operator briefs drivers not to push shopping stops.
India Fortune Journey runs a well-maintained fleet from Jaipur, including Swift Dzire and Etios sedans, Innova Crysta and Hycross, Fortuner, Tempo Travellers, Force Urbania, Toyota Camry, Mercedes E-Class and S-Class, BMW 5 and 7 Series, Vellfire and Lexus LM. Every vehicle is air-conditioned and GPS-tracked, and every quote is an all-inclusive daily rate covering fuel, tolls, permits, parking and the driver's allowances, so the figure you approve does not change on the road. Drivers are licensed, experienced with foreign guests and briefed on the route before departure.
